My Story
I have a lot of entrepreneurs in my family, including 3 uncles my dad and an aunt. They all saw an opportunity to start a business and all have been pretty successful in those ventures. My uncle and dad started an electrical company together focusing on commercial and residential properties. The company is broken into two companies, but is still one company. My dad's side focuses more on high end housing and commercial chains, while my uncles side focuses more on local residential properties. Most electrical companies do one or the other, but they have split it up allowing them to take advantage of both the big paying jobs and the small ones that can keep you afloat during slower times. They also hire different crews, commercial crews tend to need more experience and then cost more, so by splitting it up it allows them to offer competitive prices in both markets and still give the experience needed.
My aunt started a spa in New Haven Connecticut a very wealthy community, and a lot of the women there were traveling far distances to go to spas she ended up building a spa in downtown and has been very successful.
Another uncle runs a security company and uses his military experiences and connections in order to get jobs. For instance one of his biggest clients is the VA which he worked with a lot as he was training to become a combat medic.
I enrolled in this course so I could get a business elective done and I heard it was easy and would be a great match to go with my harder courses.
Hi Richard! Your families stories in regards to entrepreneurship are quite interesting! It is cool to see how families can work together to have a successful business because often times it doesn't always seem to workout. I actually can relate to having an uncle in the military start a business! It is actually a security business as well!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Richard, I have enrolled in this class for similar reasons. I wouldn’t say that I have a big drive to me an entrepreneur. On the other hand, it sounds like your family has that drive. I like how your dad and uncle split the company into two types handling different clients, that way hopefully at least one branch of the company is bringing in revenue when the other branch is slow.
ReplyDeleteTalking with people who have run or currently run their own business is the best way to gain insight into becoming an entrepreneur. Seeing the effort they put into their business and job makes you realize all the different areas one has to manage in order to have their business successful. Definitely try to talk with your family about emerging businesses they think will be big one day and maybe you will find some ideas to follow.
