9A Testing hypothesis 2

Raquel- A student at UF who owns a scooter currently. I asked first asked “Do you think motorcycles and scooters are dangerous and if so you think one is more dangerous than the other?” Her thoughts were that motorcycles and scooters are dangerous, but motorcycles are worse. I then lead into my next question, why do you think that is true? She replied the lower speeds mean that you’re less likely to be seriously hurt. So if motorcycles could only go similar speeds say only 50mph instead of 35 would you perceive them as safer? She replied, I guess so. So I followed, if both a motorcycle being able to go 50mph was for sale at $1400 and scooters cost $900, the motorcycle was also better on fuel, which would you buy? She replied it depends, which would last longer. The $800 scooters don’t last and always break down. So if the bike was better, then I’d go with that, but if it offered similar reliability I’d like the scooter.

Ariana- Do you think motorcycles are scooters are more dangerous, it really depends on how you ride, but generally I would think of scooters as being safer. If a motorcycle and scooter were the same price, which would you buy? She replied the scooter is safer. Okay, what if the motorcycle was slower say only 50 mph, and the scooter is only 35 mph, they match in price, which would you buy? Also do would the motorcycle still be more dangerous in your opinion? She replied well at that point it isn’t very different so I guess it isn’t that much of difference. I guess I would get a motorcycle since I could drive on 34th and Archer at safer speeds, but if a scooter was the same speed capabilities of 50mph I’d go with that.

Micah- Do you think a motorcycle is more dangerous than a scooter or are they equal? His response was they are both equally dangerous and it’s all dependent on the driver. I asked him if he would rather have a motorcycle or a scooter and he responded. I would honestly get a scooter if they weren’t so ugly So I asked if he would buy a scooter shaped like a motorcycle and he responded absolutely that would be so much cooler.

Kyle- Do you think motorcycles and scooters are dangerous and if so do you think one is more so than the other? I think that motorcycles are more dangerous. So then if you were to buy a bike or scooter you would get a scooter? Absolutely not those things are stupid. So what is preventing you from buying a bike? They just aren’t that useful. They offer no weather protection or storage, and I just don’t mind riding the bus.

Chris- Both are very dangerous, but scooters are worse when it comes to the open road, city riding they are both just as dangerous. Although since scooters don’t require you to wear protective gear I’d have to say that all around scooters are worse. If you had the choice to buy a scooter or motorcycle again and had to pick one, the bike being

John- I believe that scooters are safer to drive and everything. Why do you think that? They can go faster and are more unpredictable because of that ability. Also they don’t need insurance. So if given the opportunity and had to buy one, which would you buy? A motorcycle. Why not have one currently? I just don’t have the money for it. What if it was say only $1500? Oh heck yeah I’ve been looking at scooters, but only because they’re cheap.

Rick- Would you ever get rid of your Harley for a smaller bike and if so would you be willing to go? Eventually I see myself getting rid of it for one of those little Japanese cruisers they’re quick reliable and light… So how small of a cc would you be willing to go? Oh no way I could go under a 650cc

John- Would you ever be willing to get rid of your Harley for say a smaller sized bike? Absolutely not I love my big ole Harley.

Allie- Motorcycles are cooler, and if I only had $1200 and needed transportation and there was a new motorcycle a new moped or a beater car I would buy the motorcycle for sure Why? Because the motorcycle it’s a lot cooler.

Selena- After owning your motorcycle do you feel as if motorcycles or scooters are more dangerous or are they equal? “Scooters because they only have the ability to stop, they can’t exactly weave out of a situation or accelerate out of it either. How long have you been on your 250? About 6 months. Are you thinking of possibly getting a faster model or staying at the 250cc market? I will probably move into the 500ccish market, but not any higher. How come 500ish max? Anything over that starts to get too heavy and most are very tall for me as well. So if there was a bike at that 400lb mark and was short you would be more likely to get a bigger motor? Oh absolutely the weight and height is my only concern.

After completing this process I’m starting to see that the market isn’t as large as I thought. Older gentleman even though they are wanting smaller bikes, they aren’t wanting much smaller bikes. For the smaller bikes I see a market more for men than women and the women who would be interested in those smaller bikes are already kind of involved with motorcycles or have a positive outlook on them. I still believe that a lot of people perceive the slower speeds on a moped as a bonus and a safety feature. The need is a want for light weight as well as a cooler alternative to the little scooters. The need exists because students at UF want cheap transportation and right now that market only really has the scooter in it. I believe that people will still have the permanent idea that motorcycles are dangerous and no matter what won’t ever get one. In the end I think my real market will be men and women looking for a cooler ride than a scooter and people that are first getting into motorcycles.
